Cut & Puncture Protective Gloves [Nov 2009]
Protective gloves represent one of the most common and most often used measures of personal protective equipment. Their role is to protect hands against various hazards, including, among others, thermal, mechanical, chemical, biological and electric ones, often combined, thus imposing onto the gloves the requirement of multiple protection.

Are you using gloves correctly?
Chemicals coming into contact with the skin can cause diseases on the skin or elsewhere in the body due to skin absorption of chemicals. The hands are the most exposed and affected parts of the skin. Approximately 80 per cent of all work-related skin disease on the hands is irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Skin absorption of chemicals can cause poisoning and several diseases such as cancer, nervous system disorders and kidney diseases. To protect workers from effects of skin exposure to hazardous chemicals, the UK industry uses thousands of pairs of chemical protective gloves each year, costing millions of pounds to purchase, store, use and dispose of.

Demystification of disposable glove legislation
The use of disposable gloves in the general working environment is widespread. We tend to use disposable gloves for either process protection from human-borne contamination or for personal protection and often for both reasons. However, as safety in the occupational environment becomes an increasing concern, do we really understand what level of protection we are getting?

Better communication - improved glove selection
There is a great deal of confusion over the use of protective gloves throughout industry despite the efforts of glove manufacturers and COSHH legislation.
In a recent survey conducted by Sentinel Laboratories to over 2000 safety officers regarding the type of gloves used, it emerged that over 30% were recommending the wrong glove for applications within their establishments. Clearly there is a need for greater communication between the glove user, the specifier, the glove manufacturer and distributor. The recommendation to 'use a suitable protective glove' on propriety chemicals is used where the manufacturer is uncertain if there is a suitable glove or how the product will be used in the workplace.
